Transitioning

Overview:

Being an effective teacher or facilitator requires mastering transitions. Here are several methods you can use to make intentional and crisp transitions between activities.

Examples of transition cues:

  • Use a phrase to signal the start of a new activity. For example, “With empathy, reciprocity, joyfulness, you may get started!”

  • Say, “When I say go, but not yet” prior to giving the instructions for an activity. This also builds anticipation for whatever comes next.

  • Drop your voice to a whisper to catch everyone’s attention.

  • Ask someone to perform the “go” signal.

  • Skipping numbers (??????????)

  • Use a bell to signal the beginning and/or end of an activity.
