Standing, Sitting, Kneeling
Overview:
Whether you choose to stand, sit, or kneel while facilitating a group activity, there are pros and cons to each one. Some of these depend on your own characteristics and those of the people with whom you work. Because I am a tall man, it is often better to sit or kneel beside small children. If I was smaller in stature, it might be more advantageous to stand.
Standing:
As a general rule of thumb, stand during games and as a last result if the group is distracted or out of control.
Pros:
Allows you to be seen
Allows you to quickly move
Commands more respect
Cons: Can make you look intimidating
Sitting or Kneeling:
Standing or kneeling is often good when speaking one-on-one.
Pros: Speaking at their level helps children to feel power and equity in the relationship.
Cons: Makes you appear disengaged if you sit during a group activity.
