Imagination Tag

Overview

Objective: Invent an inclusive game of tag with your friends.

Why teach this lesson? This activity encourages creativity and listening skills. Friends ask questions and listen to each others’ interests in order to shape the rules of the game.

Materials: Anything you want to use for tag.

Number of players: 3+

Instructions

Design the game:

The facilitator can ask these questions or invite their friends to ask each other:

  1. 1. What should our theme of tag be? (e.g., animals, fruit, favorite book or movie)

  2. 2. How should we move? (e.g., walk, gallop, skip)

  3. 3. How should we hide? (e.g., freeze in place, pretend to be a chair, lie down)

  4. 4. What should we do when tagged? (e.g., jump up and down, sing a song, touch our nose)

  5. 5. How should we free our friends? (e.g., run around them 3 times, hold hands and say our motto)

Game Play: Divide the group into taggers and ______ using your preferred method.

Make sure everyone is on the same page about what to do for tagging, running, being tagged, and being freed.

Tips

The more you invite your friends to invent the game, the easier it is for them to use their imagination.

Reflection Questions

  1. 1. What do you do with your eyes, ears, and mouth while running?

  2. 2. How do you tag safely?

  3. 3. How can we change this game to make it even more fun - how else could you hide or be freed?
